The Mindfulness of Writing

The Mindfulness of Writing-4.pdf

Lesson Summary

Mindfulness in writing can bring about calm as we accept feelings and thoughts. Writing can help in slowing down, channeling, focusing, imagining, and organising thoughts, emotions, and tone of voice.

Writing mindfully involves reflecting on and responding to what your senses have noticed in the moment. Research suggests that writing on paper can lead to stronger brain activity and improved memory compared to using technology like tablets or smartphones.

Mindful writing allows you to describe how the world impacts you and how you leave your mark on it.

One example of mindful writing, which is the premise of this course, is therapeutic letter writing, which involves expressing open, uncensored thoughts and feelings without sending the letter. This practice can lead to emotional release, clarity, insight, stress reduction, and enhanced personal growth.

Other mindful writing practices include personal or diary journaling, gratitude journaling, reflective journaling, bullet journaling for goal setting, and stream of consciousness journaling for recording thoughts without a specific goal or prompt.
